My Starbucks Addiction

So.. as many of you know I love starbucks… To me nothing tastes better than a hazelnut mocha from starbucks! Hands down the best coffee drink ever! I seriously think I could have one for breakfast one for lunch and another after dinner… thats how much i love me my hazelnut mocha’s!

Well over the past month i have been really convicted lately about change…. As many of you also know we have been taking the youth group through program changes and the whole church has just come through a pastoral change. Throughout these changes different people have offered different objections mostly related to what has been done in the past to the way it will be done in the future… For awhile I found myself being offended by some of the things they were saying, the talking behind my back…. I mean after all who wants people talking about you behind your back and hearing second hand stories of peoples opinions to change… Many people take change differently and to be honest I always thought I was good at change… Seriously… I have been through alot in 24 years and I have alot still to go through… But I really thought that I was “good at change”…

But as I began to reflect on my own life… I do not love change! In fact, In my personal life I am about the most predictable person there is! I like only a few TV shows, I enjoy for the most part only certain types of music, and I eat at the same places Qudoba…. And most obvious of all… Hazelnut Mocha’s…

So I thought about it… if I am leading people through change maybe I should get better at “Change” So… when ever I go to Starbucks now I order something different! I also have begun to read my Bible in the AM before I head out to the church… because I have always had time alone with God later in the day but why not reading in the AM…

In my experiment to make change a regular part of my life I have not regretted one minute…. yeah i dont get my hazelnut mocha and I don’t get to sleep in an extra few minutes… But time with God in the Morning, has been amazing to start my day off with! At starbucks, I have learned that they have other good drinks and in some cases they are even cheaper!

With that all being said… I admit… Im not the best at change… But If i always drank a Hazelnut Mocha I wouldn’t ever know what else Starbucks has to offer!

I think there is a deeper lesson there too… Starbucks makes all sorts of coffee there product is amazing! Like i said if i only drank the Hazelnut Mocha’s I wouldn’t know that I can have the goodness of Starbucks in any other way… Same with Change in the Church if we always do what we have always have done we might miss out on trying something amazing! And heres a theological tie in… The Cup still contains Starbucks coffee that hasn’t changed but way it is introduced to the drinker… Something alittle different than what they are used to… doesn’t make it wrong… after all its still the Awesomeness of Starbucks! The Message doesn’t change… but the method… yeah that changes 🙂

What ruts have you placed yourself in? Maybe its time to evaluate in your own life… Change is a good thing! I believe that if we aren’t changing as people we aren’t growing…

Here are some Verses to Ponder:
Lamentations 3:22-23 (King James Version)
22 It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Isaiah 43:19 (English Standard Version)

19 Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert.

Galatians 6:9 (NIV)
“Let us not become weary in doing good,
for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

1 Timothy 6:11-12 (NIV)
“But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness,
godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.
Fight the good fight of the faith.
Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when
you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”
